Low Beginnning

    Focus on topics which can be seen or experienced first-hand (food, clothing, feelings)

    Types of Materials: Picture dictionary highly recommended; items from the real world

High Beginning

    Focus on expanding lists of everyday items and defining relationships among them

    Types of Materials: Picture dictionary, classified groups of words (verbs, prepositions)

Low Intermediate

    Focus on abstract and specialized words, word forms, simple idioms and phrasal verbs

    Types of Materials: texts on specialized topics which provide rich vocabulary in context

High Intermediate

    Focus on terminology for a variety of subjects, more idioms and phrasal verbs

    Types of Materials: Texts which provide contextualized technical terms and phrases

Advanced

    Focus on recognizing subtle distinctions in words from a wide variety of topics

    Types of Materials: Authentic texts, articles, professional writing and creative writing
